Notes From The Roadside Book 4
Book 4 begins back at the diner Alek briefly stopped at in Book 2. The waitress leaving work is upset and looks to be making things much worse. Although the group seems to be almost traveling within their own pocket universe there is some spill over linked to pain or suffering.
We then catch up with Lynn, Nick, and Darren fleeing from the motel. Barely escaping their first encounter with The Silent, Darren visibly shaken reveals that he recognizes the words exposed under the shattered mask. He’s read them in Dawn’s story.
A quick glimpse back home reveals the cemetery where Dawn is buried has not been left completely as a place of rest anymore.
On the backroads of Pennsylvania Ben and Christine speed along in hopes of catching up with the rest of the friends. Ben professes his true feelings to Christine (sadly, only in his dream). A flat tire does not help the tension between the two. Christine finds Ben’s costume in the trunk. Although incredibly embarrassing for Ben, it’s not the spoiling of a super hero alter ego but the revelation he’s made plans to meet up with another girl at a Halloween party.
….Heather *!%#$! Branson…!
Stranded alongside the road Christine is given the perfect opportunity to work out her anger as The Silent appear. She does her best to fend them off as Ben hurriedly scrambles to change the tire. During her rage fueled fight one of The Silent is launched through the air and into the path of the waitress’s car just turning into a blind curve. Swarmed and unable to help, Ben grabs Christine and they speed off. The Silent return to the accident and present a mask…
Make no mistake, this is NOT a super hero story. (Of course certain references and concepts are little nods/homages to the tropes associated with the medium. A Twinkies reference, anyone?)
Book 4 ends with Lynn, Nick, and Darren at a roadside overlook. Darren asleep in the backseat of the car, Nick and Lynn get a couple minutes to talk as the sun comes up. Is there something Nick wants to say….?
